Local desserts can be a wonderful introduction to a destination's food culture, but unfamiliar ingredients, flavours and appearances can make them easy for children to overlook. Family Translation can make that first encounter more approachable by giving children something familiar to do: create their own version.

An illustrated colouring activity featuring a well-known local dessert invites children to colour the dish and add their favourite toppings, from fruit and sprinkles to sauces, sweets or even their own imaginative creations.

As they design their dessert, simple prompts can introduce the real dish—what it is called, what goes into it, how it is traditionally served and why people love it. The goal isn't to teach children everything about the dessert, but to use creativity as an invitation to become curious about something they may not have tried before.

Better still, if the dessert is already served within the hotel, the activity can lead children from imagining it on paper to discovering and tasting the real thing.

Without context, children may be hesitant to try an unfamiliar local dessert, missing an opportunity to discover new flavours and connect with local food culture.
